Tea Gardens team’s quick actions help save customer’s life

Three Resource Recovery Australia team members are being recognised for their life-saving actions after helping a customer who suffered a serious medical emergency at the Tea Gardens Waste Management Centre.

"What Tyla, Matt and Sharon did that day is extraordinary. Their calm response and willingness to step forward in a critical moment helped save a life. We are immensely proud of them and grateful that Bob is here today because of their actions." Matt Curtis, General Manager, Resource Recovery Australia

On 28 June, 72-year-old Bob Launders was visiting the site when he suddenly collapsed. He was found unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing. Staff immediately called triple zero and commenced CPR while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Leading Hand Tyla Ralphs coordinated the emergency response, communicating with emergency services and directing first responders to the scene. Team members Matt Webster and Sharon Bagley then worked together to provide CPR until paramedics arrived and took over care.

The team later learned that Bob had survived the cardiac event thanks to the timely actions taken on site.

For Tyla, the situation unfolded quickly.

“I heard a customer calling out that there was an emergency. When we realised the gentleman wasn’t breathing, we immediately called 000 and began CPR until paramedics arrived. Later, we were relieved to learn that he was responsive and sitting up.”

The incident highlights the importance of first aid training and being prepared to respond when someone needs urgent assistance. It also reflects the strong sense of care and community demonstrated by the Tea Gardens team, who acted decisively under pressure.

Bob has since recovered and kindly gave permission for his story to be shared. He has also expressed his gratitude to the team whose quick thinking and first aid training helped save his life.

While Resource Recovery Australia is best known for creating environmental and social impact through resource recovery, reuse and recycling, this story is a reminder that the people behind its operations also play an important role in supporting the communities they serve.

Resource Recovery Australia extends its thanks to Tyla, Matt and Sharon for their professionalism and quick response, and wishes Bob and his family all the very best for the future.
