What is a Social Enterprise?

Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) is a social enterprise, but what does that mean?

For social enterprises, our peak body in Australia is Social Traders. Social Traders define a social enterprise as:

“businesses that trade to intentionally tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people access to employment and training, or help the environment.”

This means that, instead of working for a profit, we work for social and environmental outcomes.

For RRA our key outcomes are:

  1. To provide employment and training opportunities for people experiencing barriers to employment,
  2.  to divert waste from landfill, and
  3. to connect with the communities in which we work.

In all our work, we measure our success by how well we have achieved these outcomes. We ask:

  • Did this divert precious resources from landfill?
  • Did it help our local environment and community?
  • Did it provide a job or learning opportunity for someone that needed a chance?

Our operations are certified with Social Traders, ensuring we comply with a range of strict conditions to ensure our social enterprise is providing real and positive impacts for the communities in which we work.

RRA’s strategic and day-to-day planning is guided by our drive to have a positive impact on people and the planet. The Council’s, organisation’s and individuals we partner with share our vision and passion for reuse, repurposing, waste diversion, a circular economy and opportunities for local people.

RRA is a part of Community Resources. Community Resources is a not-for-profit that specialises in Social Enterprise. Along with RRA, Community Resources is also home to social enterprises Green Connect and Soft Landing.
