At Resource Recovery Australia (RRA), we believe in the incredible potential of reuse and upcycling to create sustainable communities. That’s why this year’s Reviva Reuse Competition was such an exciting event, showcasing the amazing ways everyday items can be transformed into something extraordinary.
Now in its fifth year, the competition brought together talented individuals from across Australia, each with their own unique take on reuse and repurposing. From upcycled sculptures to functional spaces, the creativity on display was truly inspiring.
Our Local Champions
We’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible local winners from our Reviva Reuse Shops:
💚 Helen from Toowoomba: A stunning Kookaburra sculpture made from old tools, scrap steel, and farming equipment, turning discarded materials into a work of art.
💚 Fiona from Dunmore: A cozy outdoor glasshouse repurposed from old doors and windows, creating a warm and inviting retreat.
💚 Sharlene from Leeton: Ingenious barbed wire balls, showcasing how even the most unlikely materials can become beautiful and functional décor.
💚 Mick from Noosa: An epic two-storey treehouse complete with fire poles, a slide, and a brass bell, all made from reclaimed materials.
💚 Patsy from the MidCoast: A quirky plant stand named Trudy, crafted from a mannequin, painted pots, and gumboots—a true statement piece!
💚 Robert from Rockhampton: A striking metal emu sculpture made from barbed wire, plow parts, and other repurposed farm equipment.
Each of these projects embodies the ingenuity and dedication of the Reviva community.
Grand Prize Winner: Shane’s Tiny House
Taking home the Grand Prize National Winner title is Shane from Noosa, whose remarkable tiny house wowed the judges. Built almost entirely from second-hand materials sourced from the Reviva Reuse Shop, Shane’s project combines sustainability, functionality, and heart.
“I just wanted to try and get out of the expensive rental market and into something that my daughter and I can call our own,” Shane shared.
The tiny house features reclaimed timber, windows, and other unique finds, all brought together with innovative solar passive design. It’s a testament to how reuse can address real-world challenges like housing affordability while supporting sustainability.
Reviva Manager Mitch said, “It’s incredible to see how Shane has transformed materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill into a beautiful and functional home for his family. It’s projects like these that show the real power of reuse.”

Addressing Consumption to Tackle Waste in Australia

Gayle Sloan, CEO of the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR), highlights that while Australians are concerned about the environment, our materialistic lifestyle drives waste generation. Since 2005, Australia’s waste per capita has surged, underscoring the need for a national conversation on consumption.
